Renewable Energy systems purchased in
British Columbia
are currently exempt from the 7% PST.
This is a provincial incentive to help people financially
when purchasing renewable energy systems. There is some fine print on
this exemption, it's there for complete systems primarily, but generally
speaking it's a great savings.
When the HST kicks in on July 1st 2010, this exemption is gone.
Customers will be paying 7% more for
alternative energy systems under the HST.
We are extremely disappointed in the loss of this exemption. We encourage
anyone who is upset by this to contact their MP's and MLA's and let them
know that you, along with 80% of the province, is not happy with this
step backwards.
To further add insult to this, purchase of fossil fuels will be exempt
from the HST. So, while society is trying to lower their impact on the
environment, we are given tax breaks on purchases which damage the environment.
Backwards.
“Point of sale rebates” will be issued on the provincial
portion (seven per cent) of the HST on the following items: books; diapers;
car seats and booster seats; children’s clothing and shoes; feminine
hygiene products; and gasoline, diesel fuel, marine diesel fuel and
aviation fuel, including bio-fuel components for motor vehicles, boats
and aircraft.
Our governments, with all the green talk, should be making it easier
for people to invest in renewable energy, not more difficult.
